Whilst lots of scientific research and consultation has taken place over recent years, no discernable improvement on policy or finding a suitable replacement for the flawed quota system has been produced. It is morally unjust, as well as totally ineffective, to waste such a valuable natural resource by throwing dead fish back into the sea as the current system encourages. In 2010 Whitby catches were are down by almost half compared with the previous year.
Our fishermen are at the forefront of the battle to conserve fish stocks and to implement sustainable methods and provide fishing opportunities for generations to come - but this current situation makes no sense. If no immediate action is taken by the European Commission to provide a viable and immediate respite for the fishermen and the community in which they live and work it may be too late.
