Sensible tweeds, waxed jackets, bookies, toutsters, punters, owners, trainers,
jockeys, the roar of the crowd - the Novices’ Cup at Catterick was my first introduction to horse racing.

I had always believed it a sport just for wealthy country bumpkins and business men, with money burning a hole in their overpaid pockets, but I was soon to discover how wrong I was - it’s far more than just a few horse races.

I was fascinated to see a much wider selection of race goers - from head-scarved pensioners to waxed jacket-wearing gentlefolk, and from couples with children to the odd hooray Henry and wife parading around the arena in their obviously expensive cashmere crombies.

They’d come to watch the horses; I’d come to watch the people!
